From my phone conversation with a smarmy representative from the two-bit management company that has taken over our apartment building, on why we should give them a copy of our apartment key:
"It's not like we'll be using it willy-nilly...just in case of an emergency. You know, like if there's water running down the walls or something."
Which, by the way, it does EVERY TIME IT RAINS. Ready for the kicker? Here it is:
"We'd hate to have to break down the door and then charge you for it."

I’d make it abundantly clear to the management company that you have documented giving them the key and you will be documenting each and every use of that key whether you are in the apartment or not. Even if you don’t set up a method where you can tell if someone has been in the apartment when you are out, they don’t need to know that. You could tape a fragile bit of paper over the door on the outside so it would break or get torn if anyone opened the door. Then they would know that you’d know. Of course, all that daily papering and taping could get old fast. Anyway, the recovering lawyer in me says that the more you let them know you are paying attention to what they might do, the less grief you’ll get from them.
"Recovering lawyer" -- LOL! Thanks for the words of wisdom, Julia. I've actually been talking to the owner of the building about all of this, and I apparently don't have to give them a key or anything else! Long stories, all...but rest assured, things are looking positive. I'll probably post about whatever the outcome is....
